To the average person, sexual education is understanding safe sex. Condoms, contraceptives, and STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) are all typically topics talked about in sex ed classes. However, as aspiring physicians, we know that sexual education should cover more than just the mechanics and safety tips. Upon talking to Jen Oliveras, a sex ed. educator for the Department of Health in the CATCH (Connecting Adolescence To Comprehensive Healthcare) program, we discussed the elements lacking within the fundamentals of sex education - specifically NYC, but also improvements that have been made to the industry. It’s all about having a conversation and raising awareness.
