Marifer and Maddie founded MedGirls in their senior year of high school. They are both aspiring physicians focusing on providing health care to underrepresented communities and raising awareness about taboo topics within the medical sphere. They hope to create a platform to engage, educate, and inspire people to learn more about their health. Through MedGirls they hope that people can broaden their perspective and question our healthcare system.
I am an aspiring physician, hoping to advocate for public health education and underrepresented minorities in healthcare. I am currently working on my undergraduate degree at Providence College. I will be majoring in Health Policy and Management on the Pre-med track. I am a daughter of Mexican immigrants, going to doctor's appointments with either of my parents introduced me to the flaws of the healthcare systems predominately for immigrants or disadvantaged demographics. I hope that this website serves as a resource for those who can understand a similar struggle.
I am aiming to pursue a job as an OBGYN to help educate girls and women more thoroughly about anatomy and self pleasure as well as provide more access/ easier access to contraceptives as well as education in less fortunate countries. I am currently attending Emory University in Atlanta Georgia, majoring in public health and following the pre-med track. As a NYC public school student, I probably took sex education five times throughout my schooling. During that time I registered that so many girls and women feel uncomfortable in their own bodies, largely because both the education system and medical system fail to normalize simple bodily functions. As I moved through high school, I quickly learned that there is often less funding for research into health issues common to women and a general lack of awareness about women’s reproductive health and anatomy. I hope this website and community can provide support for those under-represented demographics that I hope to inspire, and help talk more about these unspoken issues that women face in the healthcare industry.
